Begin with the Fragments: An Experiment in Meaning Making

Begin an explorative experiment in self-discovery and reflection; writing and art.

Discover new ways to see yourself in and shape meaning from the unarticulated evidence of the fragments you carry.

£47 sets your self-discovery in motion

“The fragment is a mirror: each person sees what they are ready to see.”

Why this exists.

Our narrative cohesion is a myth of our own construction.

Our identity forms through what we notice, gather and return to: scraps of writing, an important photo, sounds that linger, words that swim...

Before you read on, consider how often your own mind edits what it remembers.

My own work and academic research has shown me that the self is not a single story, but a collection of fragments: each one is an unobtrusive signal pointing the way forward.

What you'll do.

1. Drift and collect.

Each morning, a prompt arrives which invites you to gather fragments as the tide retreats, revealing only what’s been left along the shore: ideas, writings, images, memories, sketches. It's your cue to reflect before the day rushes in.

2. Sense and unearth.

Over five days, you’ll let the fragments settle. They ask for only your attention, but your attention changes everything. Patterns emerge and from these the fragments of meaning, devoid of a finished narrative, lead your way.

3. Harbour and reflect.

At the end of these five days, you'll have a beginning, a piece of yourself that you gathered, sensed and unearthed from all the fragments that normally go unnoticed. This is your quiet harbour.

Who this is for.

  • Anyone who senses they need something but is unsure quite what "it" is

  • People who keep notes, photos or ideas, but rarely do anything with them and want to shape meaning from the scraps they carry

  • Those longing for orientation, not a new “plan” or fix

Previous participants include writers, artists and reflective observers across disciplines.

What settles first: the fragment or the form?

Do I need to be creative or artistic?

No, this is for anyone willing to start something new.

What if I don’t have anything “ready?”

Fragments are often what we find before we know the story. This experiment is about bringing awareness to what we may not have noticed.

How much time does it take?

How long do you want to spend? There are no rules. Spend 2 minutes or 2 hours. See it as 5 moments and allow yourself the space to see where you end up.

Will I have to share?

Absolutely not. This is for you. If you'd like to share, I'd love that but it's not expected or required.

When reflection turns into recognition, where do you go next?

Beneath the reflection sits Repatterned, a self-directed cognitive process that studies how patterns of thought, emotion and behaviour shape meaning.

It’s a more intensive exploration, open now to beta participants who want to map their own system in depth.

“Autobiography is not about documenting factual truth but about creating a persona and engaging in a dialogue with the self and others.”

“Meaning is found by reflecting on fragments, not by forcing cohesion.”

“Personal narrative is performative and relational: when an artist shares fragments of her life, those stories become mirrors in which others might find pieces of their own story.”

What you'll leave with.

A true piece of yourself which you've written, made or observed and that remains yours because
you shaped it.

A repeatable process to return to whenever you feel scattered, each return a turning of the tide; familiar, yet never the same.

Begin your experiment.

Today, the tide is low enough

to see what remains.

Begin before the pattern folds back

beneath the tide.

It waits, as tides do, for your return, and the return after that, and the next...

part of your ever-turning cycle of identity.

You’ll receive your first prompt tomorrow morning by email and WhatsApp. Between now and then, let the tide turn and notice what surfaces.

“The unfinished is not a failure, but an invitation.”

Ask.

Your question is part of your experiment.

Send your message on WhatsApp; it’s the modern equivalent of a message in a bottle.

“Questions are not interruptions of meaning; they are its movement.”

Explorations

Fragmented autobiographical work.

A comprehensive narrative, rooted in chronology, is absent. Instead, images interlace with story to construct truth.

The moment leads. I move with the rhythm.

A shift in light.

A glance passed.

A gesture that might not come again.

I stay close to what’s unfolding.

When something lifts, I follow it.

When it softens, I hold the space.

What matters, I frame, I capture

You treasure.

The room’s already blurred.

She lifts her arm

mid-spin, mid-laugh and the lights scatter.

They’ve joined in.

Music moves through her.

This is the second she lets go.

The evening sun is warm on her cheek, soft across his sash.

They face each other, nose to nose,

in

the last quiet breath

of the day.

What stayed with them.

"Victoria is the nicest kindest person ever. she is honestly so fab and her work is amazing. We picked her to be our wedding photographer and from start to finish she was so professional but also kind and easy going. We were petrified of having our photos done but she put us at ease straight away and made the whole process painless. she truly is fabulous and we love our wedding pics. Thanks Victoria x"

“Victoria spent the entire wedding day with us. She snapped away the whole time and we hardly even knew she was there, unlike many other wedding photographers I’ve seen in past. I had asked for natural photos as I don’t like being photographed and she managed to capture us all so well, effortlessly. I love how she managed to capture all our guests naturally also. I absolutely love our pics and would highly recommend her”

“The minute I met you, I knew you were the person doing the wedding photos. You light up the room and make people feel at ease. You’re so genuine - you weren’t trying to be something you’re not - and so easy to talk to. You let us explain what we wanted and your attitude was, I’m here for you.”
