The images you use online and in your professional spaces need to reflect the way you operate now. Generic commercial styles give you recognisable cues, but they do not always hold the specifics of your working life. These styles often remove the details that show how you think or interact, which are the parts that illustrate your identity in practice.
You want images that show the behavioural patterns and characteristics people already recognise in you.

I study the details people show when they talk and when they interact with the things around them.
During our 90 Minute Planning and Strategy Session, I listen to the way you put your life into words because the way you articulate this, shows me how you make sense of the world.
When we meet for the photographs, I watch the actions that appear while you speak or demonstrate something simple. You might lift an object to explain a point or shift your stance while describing an event. These movements appear across different parts of your life and the camera can record them without direction or interference.
My role is to create a situation where your behaviour continues without disruption and to recognise the moments that reveal how you handle contact with another person. My work follows the patterns that appear when you think aloud or respond to another person, because these behaviours remain stable across your life and present your identity.
The photographs are taken at the points where your behaviour is most consistent and easy to read, which makes the images straightforward for you to recognise as your own and for others to recognise you.
Across history, your portrait has recorded facts about your role, your work and your position in the world.
Early rulers commissioned portraits to establish authority. Renaissance artists produced likenesses that documented physical features and social standing with greater accuracy. Photography made it possible for you to keep a record of your appearance without relying on a painter. Documentary photographers then began to show you in the places where you lived and worked, capturing clothing, tools, posture and surroundings. Digital technology made the portrait an everyday object that you create, store and distribute yourself.
Your portrait remains a practical way to study your identity. It shows your physical bearing, your expressions and the conditions in which you live and work. When you look at your portrait, you see these details held still long enough for you to examine them.

In commercial settings, your portrait is designed to meet marketing requirements.
Businesses use photographs that can be recognised quickly and understood without explanation. This produces images built around clear signals such as specific locations, fixed poses and controlled expressions. The aim is to show your role or service in a way that fits the visual language of the brand you represent.
The portrait becomes part of your promotional material and contributes to how your audience identifies you. and each visual choice supports this purpose.
Your Why uses the portrait to document your identity through observable behaviour rather than staged presentation. During the session, I pay attention to your speech patterns, your posture and the expressions that appear when you interact with your environment. I watch where your attention goes and listen to how you respond to questions. These details form the basis of the image. The photograph shows the way you operate in real conversation, not a constructed pose. Your behaviour when interacting carries more information about your identity than any pose and this is what I look for during your session: the portrayal of you as you are and not the you adopting a role created for the camera.
The approach I use to ensure that your photography is a representation of your identity is:

When you want a portrait that reflects your real identity, you often find yourself working with images shaped by generic templates. These templates encourage the same poses, locations and facial expressions across different people, which makes it harder for you to recognise yourself in the final photographs.
Over time, you notice a gap between the image you present and the way you actually function in your life. This gap can slow your decision-making when you choose photographs for websites, profiles or publications because the images don’t match who you know you are.
The photographs show the behaviour that appears whenever you speak or think through an idea. They record the way you explain and the small movements that guide your attention from one point to another. These details give a clear view of the patterns you rely on when you communicate or make sense of what matters to you.
A portrait makes these actions visible in a way that everyday interaction cannot. You see the physical trace of your thinking, the organisation that appears in your hands, face and posture when another person is present.
You take away a record that matches the behaviour people encounter when they are with you. The photographs act as a stable point you can use whenever you need to show yourself in a public or professional space. They reflect the structure you already inhabit, so you can use them without adjusting who you are for the image.
